Jacques Chirac has launched France 24, a 24-hour global news network designed to combat "Anglo-Saxon imperialism". I understand the need of a nation to assert its identity as culturally and politically distinct from its neighbors. Most identities are born out of resistance to the perceived threat of "the other". But identifying your oppressors as Anglo-Saxons? They haven't threatened Europe since they were squashed by the Normans in 1066. Has Chirac forgotten his history, especially how England was Frenchified by William and his crew?
At least our president has no interest in launching his own television network. A Bush TV network would be intellectually inane and dishonest at best. Thank Jebus we don't have a channel like that in the United States.
