the day the republic died
On December 12, 2000 the Supreme Court released its decision in Bush v. Gore. In a 5-4 decision the Court ruled to end the Florida recount thereby awarding Florida's 25 electoral votes and the presidency to George W. Bush.
During the subsequent six years President Bush plunged the nation into two wars, which have killed 3,293 U.S. soldiers and over 100,000 Iraqis and Afghans; erected a network of secret prisons throughout the world that practice torture; tripled the national debt and dismantled the English language.
In 1532, Spaniards in Mexico City managed to Christianize the Aztec mother goddess Tonantzin. This "Empress of America" helped gain converts to Catholicism and effectively colonize indigenous Meso-American culture. Today December 12 is celebrated as the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. She occasionally appears on tortillas and grilled cheese sandwiches on eBay.
