vittoria

71 is the new 51? If a septuagenarian can win in Italy then maybe he could win here. Take some pointers Mr. McCain. Props to the Los Angeles Times for showing Francesco Totti in the voting booth. But he bleeds Roma, so I can't see him casting a vote for Mr. Milan, but you never know...

proof he's a better actor than the real thing

MADRID, March 8 (Reuters) - A prankster pretending to be Oscar-winning American actor Nicolas Cage fooled Real Madrid into thinking he was the real thing and enjoyed red carpet treatment at this week's Champions League match against AS Roma.

The lookalike, Italian television presenter Paolo Calabresi, watched Wednesday's game from the directors' viewing area at the Bernabeu and was taken into the team dressing room afterwards, Spanish sports daily Marca reported on Saturday. He was even photographed being presented with a personalised Real shirt by club president Ramon Calderon.

Priceless. No one else is as deserving of this trickery than that douchebag Calderon.

Of course I'm rooting for the Arse to win the Champions League - but I've got a soft spot for Roma. A quarterfinal tie of Arsenal-Roma would be mind-blowing. Two of the most attack-minded teams in Europe going at it...shit. Can't wait for the draw on Friday...

partition is the only option

Independent provinces assembled into a nation-state during the early modern era. Inter-ethnic strife dating back hundreds of years. An oppressive artificial kingdom created to rule over disparate ethnic regions. Conflict bursting by the minute. There is no other choice but to break apart this artificial state and grant autonomy to the warring tribes.

forza roma

Naturally, the Manchester United fans are angry at the Roma police response:

Some witnesses inside the ground spoke of terrified women and children running away from the police during one baton charge, while a disabled man was reportedly knocked out of his wheelchair...

Rome's head of police, Achille Serra, insisted the police action was a "justified response", and said there would be no inquiry unless he were shown evidence of any alleged police brutality.

Italian Football Federation president Giancarlo Abete backed Mr Serra's comments: "The English press speak of heavy handed police? We owe gratitude to our law enforcers.

"I don't believe those who try to make games safe can be crucified in this manner."

Yes, Mr. Abete. Don't crucify the cops. They were just doing their job.

Speaking of crucifixion, today just happens to be Good Friday! Perhaps Pope Benedict instructed the Roma Polizia to give it to the Manchunians. The Romans have a knack for violence.

brains and brawn

While most footballers fuss about their hair styles, marketablity and sex appeal, France and Barcelona defender Lilian Thuram is the thinking man's footballeur. For Thuram, there are "much more important things in life than money, fame or even football".

In a new Guardian interview, Thuram describes his experiences as an immigrant in France, his love of Miles Davis, and his dislike of French Neo-Con presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy. The Guadeloupe-born defender is politically active - challenging racism not only in European football but in France as a whole - and quite astute on the important issues of the day.

It's a good read, even for you non-soccer folk.

with apologies to joe strummer

Teflon Tony is resisting to cede the reigns of Parliament.

Last summer, my mom ran into Tony Blair and Bono in Pebble Beach, CA. My parents had visited the Inn at Spanish Bay and were leaving the hotel when Bono and Blair crossed their path. Bono ignored them but my mom recognized Blair and he responded politely by flashing her a smile. Say what you want about his politics, but at least he's not an asshole who turns a small town's breakfast ritual into a PR event.

but will they have nude weather forecasters?

Jacques Chirac has launched France 24, a 24-hour global news network designed to combat "Anglo-Saxon imperialism". I understand the need of a nation to assert its identity as culturally and politically distinct from its neighbors. Most identities are born out of resistance to the perceived threat of "the other". But identifying your oppressors as Anglo-Saxons? They haven't threatened Europe since they were squashed by the Normans in 1066. Has Chirac forgotten his history, especially how England was Frenchified by William and his crew?

At least our president has no interest in launching his own television network. A Bush TV network would be intellectually inane and dishonest at best. Thank Jebus we don't have a channel like that in the United States.

language and identity

"I only speak Spanish to my maid and to a few workers," Sostres wrote. "It is a language of the poor, of the illiterate and of people of low ability to speak a language that makes such a frightening sound just to pronounce the J."

The Spanish language is again under attack, but not where you might think.

the passion of the berlusconi

after suffering a "heart scare", the Italian Rupert Murdoch admits overdoing it:

Alberto Zangrillo, the doctor who treated Berlusconi at Milan's San Raffaele hospital, said the politician had turned his room there into an office. But he said Berlusconi needed to calm down and rest more.

"His body is like a Ferrari but he is driving it at a crazy speed. He must be careful, otherwise he risks skidding and going off the road," Zangrillo said in an interview with La Repubblica newspaper.

Berlusconi's aides have played down the health scare and said he would get straight back into the political fray. But his collapse came as a shock for the centre right, which the billionaire media tycoon has dominated since entering politics in 1994.

His futbol club A.C. (Always Cheating) Milan released a comforting statement on their website:

OUR PRESIDENT IS FINE

Well, thank god, because if it wasn't for Silvio there would be no other balding, Napoleon-complex, right-wing Italian political tycoons to make fun of...

le pauvre le pen

racists just can't get a break anymore. In France that is.

Far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen has a long history of xenophobic nastiness going back to his career torturing Algerians during the 1950s. Can't you picture him watching the Battle of Algiers with Dick Cheney and reminiscing "in zee old days I would waterboard zee Mooslims for hours and hours and never get tired!"

Let's hope the French don't let this wanker run for president. Just this past summer he blamed France's loss in the World Cup final on the coach's selection of too many dark-skinned players. Well, he's 79 years old. Let's wish for a quick death and good riddance.

FIFA goes scab picking

BERLIN (AP) - FIFA wants to bring together Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi so they can put the head-butting incident from the World Cup final behind them. "We are definitely working on that," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Monday.

Blatter said one suggestion was for the two to meet at Robben Island in South Africa, where former President Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders were once imprisoned.

Both Zidane and Materazzi have publicly indicated that this event is behind them. Is there really a need for a reunion? Blatter wants the two to kiss and make up at the Robben Island prison. Tell me how a headbutt in a sporting match final is equivalent to racial apartheid in South Africa. Can't they meet at Euro Disney instead and pose with Mickey Mouse? Jebus, FIFA is becoming almost as irrelevant as the UN.

waiting on a sunday afternoon...

I'm sad to report that the video of Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi dry-humping a meter maid is a hoax. According to Wonkette it is from a low-budget German satirical film called Bye Bye Berlusconi.

But here's a Berlusconi headline that will put some cheer in your gut:

Bono says feels "exploited" by Berlusconi mag

Excuse me while I go shed a tear for this Irish multi-millionaire who is suffering at the hands of a megalomaniacal Italian politician. Come on people, it's hard to be Bono!

silvio berlusconi campaign video

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is a stand-up guy. Here he is caught on amateur video doing some juvenile antics. I think this once and for all answers the question "Are all Italian men horny bastards?"

Check out his verbal gaffes. I admit he doesn't come close to the inanity of BushSpeak but there are some winners in this list. For instance, he promised to abstain from sexual activity during his campaign to appeal to "family" voters and has proven his lack of humility by saying "I am the Jesus Christ of politics...I sacrifice myself for everyone."

About

I guess you could say this is the "Original Pime". I stopped blogging here regularly in May 2008 (if you don't count the B-Sides diversion - yes it gets confusing) when I joined the Tumblr revolution. Going forward bravely into 2009, this site will serve to house any large image work I produce.

Peace out.
