read it and weep

For the past week I've been using Google Reader to aggregate my total internet experience. Doing so has led me to new and exciting territory. It has also led me to sites I ordinarily would not visit. One of these is "Men's Health" magazine, which I found through some blog whose link I've since misplaced.

Here is a sampling of the headlines on their site:

  • Avoid Raising a Serial Killer
  • Learn When to Unleash Your Anger to Get Ahead
  • Be More Like Hemingway
  • Samuel L. Jackson tells us how to be cool (well, cooler)

To summarize...it's cool to be an angry, bull-fighting drunk who says "motherfucker" 50 times per day as long as you get that promotion you've always wanted and don't inspire your child to random homicidal outbursts.

Yep, sounds like perfect reading for the postmodern American male.

voodoo economics

In the interests of full disclosure, I cannot completely denounce Rupert Murdoch without first acknowledging that I enjoy one small outpost in his media empire. On Saturday morning Rupie delivers the English Premiership to my home via Fox Soccer Channel.

That said, I can now criticize the remainder of his imperial holdings.

His newly inaugurated Fox Business Channel has sought financial analysis from an astrologer. Umm, ok. I guess Saturn and Uranus have some impact on Ben Bernanke's decision to lower interest rates. And labiaplasty is akin to picking the right stocks.

My late grandmother (one of the single most important persons in my life) was heavily into astrology and numerology. These are two big no-no's according to her Catholic church. She also claimed to have seen Jesus and numerous spirits (but those stories, if I ever get to them, are for another day). Too bad she's not here 'cos I could ask her what the planets had to say about the impending recession...

every story has an angle

Following up on yesterday's report of Holy Spirit-guided bullets, the AP offers this stunning development:

DENVER - Matthew Murray’s world was haunted by demons. Somehow, a child of a prominent doctor, someone who was homeschooled in a comfortable Denver suburb, evolved from would-be Christian missionary to a killer trying to rain Columbine down on the Christian world.

A family spokesman said Murray grew up in a loving home. But other interviews and what appear to be Murray’s own online ramblings portray a disturbed individual who resented his sheltered upbringing, had problems with his mother, heard voices in his head, felt rejected and abused — and yet appeared to be searching for a place to belong.

Really? Demons? "Suburb", "homeschooled" and "child of a prominent doctor" seem to be much more possible motives than angry fallen angels.

Let me get this straight. Demons are the cause for all the evil, suffering and misfortune in the world. God occasionally intervenes through certain chosen people to save the day. Humans are at the whim of these supernatural forces and have no free will whatsoever.

Thanks for clearing that up.

"We live in an era when men have to rely on the sanity and the mood of a woman rather than the U.S. Constitution for his protection," he told the host of Fox's Your World. "Between the EEOC rules and the Violence Against Women Act, the workplace has become a dangerous place for men."

I have one question for Neil Cavuto...why are you booking this douchebag as a guest when you could bring back Richard Simmons?!?

socal-fires

This was taken from one of the region's many fine media establishments. They're always quick to point out the celebrity angle of any story, especially when the celebrities hate America.

Tart points out another fine example of excellence in wildfire media coverage. Then there was the local Fox affiliate was too obsessed with saluting the flag to properly cover the Santiago fire.

Amidst all this devastation I recalled something my good Senator said last month:

“The California National Guard has lost so much equipment as a result of the war in Iraq that, according to the Secretary of the Army, the Guard may lack the capability to respond to a large scale emergency such as a catastrophic earthquake or major flood. This is unacceptable. My amendment will help Congress get a more accurate picture of the Guard’s equipment shortages and needs so we can ensure we are fully prepared to respond to domestic emergencies. We must not wait for disaster to strike before we act.”

Doh! At least they're able to put out fires in Ramallah with all those large helicopters and airplanes.

uncivilized?

GULFPORT, Miss. -- Police were called to break up a weekend fight among a rowdy group of teenage girls at the family-themed pizza restaurant, Chuck E. Cheese. The more than a dozen girls, between 13 and 16 years old, went berserk in the restaurant's lobby Saturday night, police said.

Witnesses said the fight erupted with two girls using profanities near the front entrance and ended with several girls involved in a physical fight. The group had apparently been dropped off and left alone at the restaurant, known for its singing and dancing animatronic rodents. Assistant Police Chief Alfred Sexton said the incident wasn't the first time Chuck E. Cheese was nearly overrun by unruly teens.

Bill O'Reilly needs to investigate this place immediately.

festival of books

Yesterday my uncle and I headed up to UCLA for the LA Times Festival of Books. It was my first time going. My uncle raves about it every year he goes, so I finally had to go check it out. Picture a county fair but instead of deep-fried food unfit for farm hogs and lame fair games, the music, entertainment, booths, and activities are all concerned with arts and literature.

There are several panels throughout the day featuring authors, poets, journalists and filmmakers. We really wanted to see Gore Vidal at Royce Hall (pictured below) but being he was the most popular attraction of the day, it was sold out.

We attended a panel called "The Future of News" featuring Jim O'Shea, the new editor of the LA Times; Mark Halperin, ABC News political director and James Taranto of the Wall St. Journal editorial page. What could have been a decent conversation about the challenges facing the news media became a PR session for these old media folks to defend their craft and demean new media (a.k.a. blogs). O'Shea, a former Chicago Tribune editor brought in to run the LA Times last November received boos and hisses from the audience. Angelinos aren't too happy about Chicago billionaire Sam Zell taking over their paper and installing his own crew of bureaucrats.

The second panel was great. Titled "Scripted Spaces: What is the West?", panelists Marc Cooper, Norman Klein and Craig Childs discussed illusions, postmodernity and the artificiality of 21st century life.

Oh, and there was capoeira, the Brazilian dance/martial art.

We then meandered around the hundreds of booths. Practically everyone had a spot - Scientologists, the Ayn Rand institute, Muslims giving out free Korans. The ImpeachBush and 9-11Truth folks were out in full force, so were the Jews for Jesus. I caught this pic below of some Christian dude trying to give out free bibles to some hijab-clad women. They seemed a bit reluctant to give in...

On the way back from UCLA we stopped at the Veteran's cemetary on Western Ave. where my grandparents are buried. My grandfather was a WWII vet. His ashes were placed in the cemetary in 1990. It's been almost five years since my grandmother's ashes were added to the plot but I hadn't yet visited. It was nice to see them together again.

Oh, and LA traffic sucks ass.

why just read the news when you can opine too

That's right, folks. Comments aren't just for blogs anymore.

My pal El Serracho calls it "the best thing that has ever happened to us". News sites allowing their readers to post comments on articles is bloody brilliant. Take my local conservative news organ. Orange Countians get to spend their days at work leaving such enlightened apoplectic statements as this:

Why would we even consider allowing some third world puke that is a resident alien to purchase guns? Am I missing something here? Guns aren't the problem, politicians letting ANYBODY into this country to get educated, steal our resources, send our money to some other country. Wake up america, you keep voting for the same stupid people.

It's not as if a white U.S. citizen has ever shot up a school before. But wait, there's more racism for you! This comment follows an article about the local screening of a documentary on the Arizona-Mexico border:

The US government should build laser turrets on the border so that every time someone tries to illegally enter our country, the turrets will zap them just like in Command and Conquer. And no this is not a racial comments. It's ok to use lethal force to protect our very nation.

Yeah man, it will be just like playing Warcraft!

A bicyclist was hit and killed by a pickup truck. It's a tragedy anyway you look at it, but not if you're a racist:

I thought it was legal to run over a Mexican if you saw one riding a bike...

No one does care about the filthy mexican. Deal with the truth bud.

I could go on, but I don't wait to induce any more stomach cramps.

About

I guess you could say this is the "Original Pime". I stopped blogging here regularly in May 2008 (if you don't count the B-Sides diversion - yes it gets confusing) when I joined the Tumblr revolution. Going forward bravely into 2009, this site will serve to house any large image work I produce.

Peace out.
